Adventures in Baking
On Wednesday, January 9, Aaron thought it would be "COOL" to bring home a starter bag of Amish Friendship bread from his homeroom teacher. Me.....uhmmm, not so much!! Aaron begged me to PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE MAKE IT MOM, PLEEEEEEEEEEASE!!! So, I figured that since this bag managed to make it through an ENTIRE school day *AND* the bus ride home.....ok, it was my sweet 12 year old son looking at me with those big blue eyes and shiny braces, heck - I could give it a try.
For those of you who have never made this stuff before, it's alot of random bag mashing for 10 days. I guess they want you to feel like you are doing something special for the bread. Except day 5 or something --- then you have to pour in milk and flour BUT YOU CANNOT REFRIGERATE IT!! Ok, that goes against everything I've heard about milk. It MUST be in the fridge or it stinks bad. Obvisouly, they want that to happen because it does stink but does not curdle.
Ok - fast forward to day 10......baking day! On Saturday morning, I get up and the first thing I hear is "IS TODAY THE DAY WE BAKE THIS?" Yes, AJ, it is---- can I atleast open my eyes first???? PLEASE!!! Soooo, mid-morning I start mixing all the batter. Get the 4 starters ready for unsuspecting friends, I mean DEAR FRIENDS and suddenly realized that I had 3 missing ingredients so it had to wait till I could go get them.
Later in the day we go out to pick up some things and grab the MIA ingredients. Come home and immediately begin finishing it. I get down to baking powder ----- you guessed, no baking powder but AHA...Alan is on his way home from work. Yeah, he wasn't happy about this quick stop on the way home but I had a bowl of almost done bread and an antsy 12 year old. Desperate times call for desperate measures!!! Daddy to the rescue!
Aaron became the official bread prep photographer..... Side note about the bowls I used. They were my Maw-Maw's bowls. I have a set of 3 and I love them. I swear that they make everything taste better!!!
Here's a small recap of the chaos...I mean festivities!!
Adding the vanilla pudding -
Adding the eggs -
Mixing it all together -
The batter -
I have NEVER done anything from scratch before and I am so PROUD of my finished product!!!

Hi-I found your blog through LouLou. We made that same bread. Made the mistake of making it RIGHT before we heard we got pink. So, we ended up giving all the bags away because I just couldn' be making bread every 10 days :) Yours looks pretty good!
Oh, and they do freeze pretty well.
Kristi it looks very yummy! Almost as good as your lazy lasagne! haha!

Can I have a bite? ;)
Good for you!
My mom is doing this, too, and she has a nice variation. She adds Eagle Brand topping to hers. It is DIVINE! Serve it warm, and your family will literally melt...
Good luck!
